Objectives.

The aim of this work package is:

to produce and enrich data on collaborative cross-national research projects (RJVs) funded by the European Commission under the FPs and the Horizon 2020 initiative, covering a period of more than 35 years,

– to develop social network analysis metrics and to construct the under-study networks

-to study the nature, structure and evolution of the research networks,

– to identify the role and participation intensity of participating organizations within the collaborative projects over time and how they benefit from their presence in the networks,

– to analyze and to understand the participation patterns and the different roles of the participating organisations (central ,peripheral etc.) as well as the characteristics of the relationships between them.

Description of Work

An empirical analysis of primary data will be carried out using both quantitative and qualitative Social Network Analysis methods. The analysis will be based on the creation of an extensive database, containing all cross national collaborative research projects funded under FP and Horizon 2020 initiatives. In this context, social network analysis will be employed to investigate network structure and dynamics, and examine the position and role of the participating organizations over a 35-year period. Visualization techniques will be also used to highlight the linkages between various participating actors. Understanding how these networks are formed and how they have evolved over time may provide useful policy implications for the design and structure of the current and future EU research Programmes as well as for the design of more effective national (complementary to FP) research policies.
